A stage setting that looks beautiful and realistic is nothing more than canvas, wood, styrofoam and paint. This video illustrates many of the scene painting techniques which produce this magic transformation. Professional scenic artists from Cobalt Studios in New York demonstrate how to paint a complete set consisting of a floorcloth, a backdrop, a cut border, and a three-dimensional fence with a stone gate and an arbor. Some of the techniques demonstrated include laying out a string grid for a large backdrop, sketching the outlines of small painter's elevation onto the full-size backdrop, flogging, transfering patterns using a pounce wheel, using highlight, neutral and shadow colors to give the illusion of three dimensions, replicating patterns using custom stamps, and creating textures using sawdust. This video is a great introduction to a scene painting class because it shows the magic that scenic artists can create. |
